Don't Think About It

(a page from The Artist in the Office)

I love this quote from Andy Warhol. It's a good reminder to ignore the critic that lives in my brain and just start making stuff. I'm a very thoughtful person, and I have a tendency to be too analytical at times and over-think things. I'm working on trying to switch off my brain and do more, to let my hands just do the work and see where I end up.

I hope everyone enjoys the long holiday weekend! Take some time to hang out with friends, twirl a few sparklers, gaze at fireworks, and eat food that is terrible for you in the grand tradition of the 4th.

  3. Great quote. I, too, tend to be really over analytical about things I'm writing or making; I have to consciously force myself to push those thoughts aside and just keep going. Or, at the very least, go to bed and start fresh the next day, knowing that I'll feel more confident after getting some rest.

  7. Ahhh, I love this! Andy Warhol has been my artist since high school, and this quote needs to be taped on my wall (or across my forehead). SO TRUE.

Kind of the same premise - When I lived at the Tibetan Buddhist Center, the monks would spend days making gorgeously detailed sand mandalas, then as soon as they were done, brush them away. The concept was that it was the process of art, and the beauty of making something, rather than the finished product. I always think about that when I'm being impatient with a project, or start to feel like the end result won't be "good" enough.

    Thanks for sharing this!

  8. My own voice is often my worst critic. Great quote to make me remember to not invest too much in what the critics think.

Thanks for the visit last Sunday. Wishing you a good holiday weekend.

  9. Oh, he is so right. Art is primarily egoistic, I think. It is about how you feel and how you express yourself and that is why you should just do it, to keep yourself sane :)

  10. This is a great quote - and so true of blogging as well. So many of my favourite bloggers just post spontaneous bits of their lives and I love it!
