Alice in Wonderland

I love these illustrations by Leonard Weisgard from 1949. I'm frequently drawn to illustrated work from the 40s, 50s, and 60s, but I'd never seen these before. I love the all-over compositions and the texture of the pieces, which almost look like collages. His biography lists decoupage as one of the media he worked in, so it's possible that there are multiple layers going on here.

Don't you want to just climb into this world and get lost for a bit?

  1. The illustrations are wonderful but I find myself unable to "digest" any illustrations different than the original, with which I grew up. All other attempts look weird to me. I remember, when studying for my MA in philology I took a fairy tale translation course where we had to come up with our own translations of Winnie-the-Pooh. Then, after much effort I realized how pointless it was, even if the original translation had its faults so many generations had grown up wth it that it was just the right one!

    I guess I am a traditionalist...
