Scenes from (a Colorful) Life

I felt like continuing with a woodland theme this week so today's color is brown. I know I've posted lots of bright colors in this series, but I also love neutral tones. I'm a sucker for natural wood and brick, warm autumnal colors, and texture...especially the kind of texture that comes from age and use and hanging around for a couple hundred years (who knows how many generations of brick and stone are in that house in the 6th photo).

The 5th photo is a detail of a piece by Lloyd Schermer that hangs in the lobby of the Newseum. (He also has a similar one hanging in the American Art Museum.) The pottery in the 7th picture is from the Sackler Gallery, but I can't remember if it's Japanese, Chinese, or Korean. (If anyone knows, feel free to share in the comments). And the last photo is an art installation by Roxy Paine called New Fungus Crop at the Hirshhorn. (I blogged photos of a large stainless steel tree sculpture he made that stands in the National Gallery Sculpture Garden a couple of years ago, which you can see here if you're interested.)

All of these photos make me want to get outside and explore nature-y things. The leaves have only just begun to change here. I'm hoping we will have a few nice weekend days when the peak hits so that we can explore and take photos. It's been a while since I took any new photos, other than for my shop.

I'm not sure what this weekend holds for us. We might be hanging out with some old friends we haven't seen in years. We might be doing house stuff. I might be getting a badly-needed hair cut. Or we might not do any of those things and take a day trip somewhere. What are you guys up to?

  1. Yessssss, neutrals! I really love the wood stamping blocks, and now cool that it's part of an art installation. (Newseum! Love it.) I would buy more of those to have around, but they're kind of pricey around here.

We're heading to Indy tomorrow for my mom's birthday, and then Sunday will be our usual combination of housework and football. What kind of haircut are you thinking about?

  2. These photos are all perfect for the season. Browns and greens always remind me of fall.

  3. The leaves are at Peak color change in NY state and I love it. Makes the morning drive to the train a little less annoying. :)

  5. These pictures are perfect, they make me want to cozy up next to a fire and drink hot tea! There's something so homey and grounded about the neutral browns and beiges.

  6. The first thing I thought when I saw the pictures was the amount of brown and green in them. I love earthy colors. Today, I'm gonna go rock climbing with some friends and this weekend is devoted to homework and etsy stuff. I have lots and lots of homework to do.

  7. I love the rustic vibe of these. And I'm jealous of all of the cool old brick buildings you guys have out east! My weekends are infinitely more boring when Robbie is on tour these days - I'm working on the house and have a lunch date with a friend. That's it! Enjoy your weekend!

  8. I was just thinking today that the beauty of neutrals tends to get overlooked in the fall, when the trees are so showy. Your pictures are great reminders of the good reasons to look carefully at the subtle and quiet!
