The Nature of What We See
A quick glance and you might think these are macro photographs, but these beauties are actually oil paintings of minerals and semi-precious gems by Canadian artist Carly Waito. I love that each image looks familiar yet also like gazing at an alien planet. I often think objects in nature take on a strange and almost supernatural character when viewed up close. Waito accurately captures the unique properties of each specimen, but unlike a scientific rendering, she emphasizes color variations and highlights and shadows and also exaggerates depth of field, all of which allow us to better see the mystery of these beautiful objects.

ReplyDeleteI would never, ever guess these were paintings! So impressive! I especially love that smoky quartz at the top. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteWow, she is super talented...I love macro shots anyway. I am always taking macros of flowers and sometimes get lost in their intricacies:)

ReplyDeleteWOW - that is crazy - I never would have guessed that these are paintings. This artist must be so patient - each piece must take forever!

This is utterly seductive.
ReplyDeleteI clicked on the first one to see it bigger, closer... Then realized that what I really want is to touch them!
WOW! Those are amazing! I never would have guessed they were paintings.
ReplyDeleteWow! I did think these were macro photos! So you say this is painting... my god! I sometimes get lost in present day art. Which is which and why and where... but what's beautiful is beautiful and Carly Watto must be so patient!
