My Weekend

I thought about doing another "photo every hour" post last Sunday since it's been a while, but it just didn't pan out. I did still take a few snapshots though, so here are a few peeks at my weekend.

We picked up some mums for the front porch, and they are the prettiest color.

We're going to add some pumpkins too, and we're looking for planters. If anyone has a good source for inexpensive outdoor planters that don't look really cheap, I'd love recommendations. I also think I might change out our door mat for something more seasonally appropriate, though the one we have right now is cute. :)

I got a custom request for two magpie brooches, and I was so excited to have an "official business" reason to pull out my National Geographic Field Guide to Birds that Peter and I bought at an estate sale last summer. I could just google "magpies," I know, but this is more fun.

We tested a couple of pink paint colors for the hallway. I had trouble photographing the color accurately here, but I think the one we're going to go with is called passion fruit (sort of a bright coral pink). I know I'm long overdue for a house update, but we'll probably be done painting and other things in a couple of weeks, and I'll definitely share pics when we're done.

I can't believe I haven't killed these plants yet. My succulents are still looking pretty good.

I was testing the settings on my camera and snapped this photo of Peter reading. It always takes me a long time to get out of the house, and Peter is usually in this position while he's waiting for me to get my camera or answer an email or finish doing any of the 80 things I'm usually doing at once.

We stopped by an antique shop when we were out running errands. I thought this shelf of red teapots was the happiest thing in the store.

Events not pictured: me in a food coma after eating my weight in burritos; driving an hour and a half out of our way in a downpour on Saturday because we were completely lost; Peter bringing me pumpkin scones and coffee on Sunday morning; Hitchcock movies playing in the background while we did things around the house (anyone else love "Sundays with Hitch" on TCM?); and 3 cop cars being called to my neighbors' house Saturday night...these people just moved in and there's some weird stuff going on over there...I feel very The 'Burbs about it actually).

We didn't get as many things checked off my list as I wanted, but we never do, so that's to be expected. Actually, Peter and I were talking about what we were going to work on around the house, and suddenly I started laughing and said, "Wait a minute, this is us, so maybe we should dial back that ambition a notch or two." And then we laughed. A lot.

Anyway, we're both very excited it's officially fall, since that's officially the best time of year. Hope you guys had a good weekend too. xo, Mary

  1. The cops are always at our neighbor's place too because their teenage son is always getting into something. Ha! Love your vibrant red mums!

  2. Looks like a good weekend! I want to watch the Birds, but I am afraid my bird-phobia (which has gotten worse after a certain poop-incident) will get worse! Any other Hitchcock movie you can recommend? I like that collection of teapots!

    1. There are so many good Hitchcock movies! If you've never seen any at all, I would recommend Rear Window, Vertigo, and Psycho. Those three are probably his most popular films. I also think you'd like The Trouble With Harry and North by Northwest.

I actually have seen all of his movies, and I find something to like in most of them. The only one I can't watch is Frenzy. I find it really much more disturbing than any of his other films, one of the most disturbing movies I've ever seen actually. So I definitely don't recommend that one! But apart from Frenzy, you really can't go wrong with Hitchcock.

  4. Oo the mums look pretty. Do they die quickly? I'm looking for some flowers to add some color to the balcony. Also.. I love the Burbs..seriously a Tom Hanks fan. Also.. I never seem to get inside pictures to look right unless I'm using my flash or have an extreme amount of light coming in.

    1. I think if you buy them in late Sept, they should probably last till Halloween and maybe through Nov. unless you have an early frost. It really depends on the plant, I guess, and also where you live. I read some articles that said they need a full 8 hours of sunlight a day...other articles said that would encourage them to bloom quickly (and thus die faster) so not to put them in full sun. I'm not sure which is correct.

Either way, they are on sale pretty much everywhere right now. We got ours for $4.49 a piece, so even if they don't last more than a few weeks, I'm enjoying them. :)

  9. Ugh, mums and I don't get along. I know you have to water them a lot, and I just never remember. Poor things. I had some that were the same color last year, on the front porch, and they died really quickly.
